Spello, beautiful village loved by Caesar.
“Splendid Julia colony”: so it was how Caesar declared the city of Spello, named “Hispellum” in Roman times.
Located practically in the heart of Umbria Region, Spello is part of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Formerly in the Middle Ages, Spello became a free town with free laws, despite given as feud to the Baglioni family of Perugia by the Pope in 1516.

Starting from the city walls, dating back indeed to the Roman period, and from which three gates open: the Urbica Door, that we find in Via Roma.
The splendid Consular Door, situated on the Market Square; and finally the Venere Door, augustan, equipped with two imposing Romanesque towers (the Towers of Properzio, ed) dodecadegonal based.
In your trip in Spello you can not go to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore: inside you will find authentic wonders, such as the Cappella Baglioni, which houses frescoes by Pinturicchio (including his famous self-portrait) and a floor of majolica Deruta of really great importance.
Still inside the church, the Baroque elements stand out, including an altar.
Other churches worth to visit are the Church of Sant’Andrea and that of San Lorenzo. The first is home to a community of minor Friars, the second is rich of splendid frescoes and a ‘400 tabernacle.
In addition to religious buildings, it is really worth going to the Roman House, which dates back even to the first century after Christ; it should have belonged to Vespasia Polla, mother of Vespasian, as suggested by the inscription on the wall of the same building.
Inside there is the grand original flooring, with the mosaic of black and white tiles.
The extraordinary art preserved in Spello is enhanced by the beautiful combination with flowers.
Blends in one of the most striking events of the entire region. The floral display of Corpus Christi, which is held between May and June, where the entire urban lattice of the wonderful village become a true floral carpet.
Flowers are also used to realize amazing paintings with sacred images: features that make Spello the “Flower Capital”.
