The spectacular Giardino degli Aranci

Rome is certainly one of the top listed tourist destinations, for its countless architectural and artistic works, as well as for its historical importance.

One of the most beautiful places to see is the spectacular Giardino degli Aranci, that is the Parco Savelli, this is precisely located on the Aventine Hill, in Ripa district, Pietro d’Illyria square, and covers about 7,800 square meters.

History of the Garden of the Oranges.

The name “Giardino degli Aranci” is due to the presence of numerous trees of bitter oranges. This spectacular garden covers an area of an ancient fort built by the family of Savelli between 1285 and 1287.

But the garden, as we see it today, was created by the architect Raffaele De Vico in 1932, infact they wanted to create a new panoramic viewpoint (in addition to the Pincio and the Gianicolo) that overlooked by that side of the hill.

This gorgeous garden has a symmetrical shape, its median boulevard is in line with the viewpoint, this was dedicated to the actor Nino Manfredi.
The avenue then opens in two spaces, while the central square was given the name of another actor who is a symbol of Rome and the Roman world, Fiorenzo Fiorentini.

In the garden you can see the particular, characteristic and beautiful fountain that is however made of two pieces of bare. These are the huge mask in marble that was carved for a fountain of Campo Vaccino in 1593, which is placed inside an ancient Roman thermal basin  made of granite, rectangular and a bit recessed over the street level, it is decorated with two handles in low relief and edged with a band of travertine.

The park today is equipped with three entrances: starting from the main one where you can access from the square Pietro d’Illiria, this really impacts, because in 1937 was added a portal from Villa Balestra; the second entrance is in Via Santa Sabina; and finally the third is accessed by going on clivo Rocca Savella.

This is definitely a place to be seen if you go to the capital of our beautiful country.
