The village of Chianale

The province of Cuneo is famous for its superb landscapes. Right here, in the area of Val Varaita at the border with France, we find the hamlet of Chianale, which along with other seven form the village of the municipality of Pontechianale. We are more than 1600 meters above sea level.

At first glance, what is in front of the eyes is a landscape that seems remained unchanged for centuries.

The village of Chianale is with full rights one of the most beautiful in Italy, with its typical houses surrounded by the majesty of the Alps, which seem about to protect one of the last cradles of Occitan culture.

WHAT TO DO AND WHAT TO SEE

One of the most popular peculiarities among tourists who travel to Chianale concerns the beautiful and dense forests: over all, it should be mentioned the Alevè, the largest Arolla pine forest in Europe. In summer it’s possible to reach the Colle dell’Agnello at 2748 meters before descending in the region of Queyras.

If you are instead interested in going for a walk to the village center, you will immediately notice that it is divided into two parts by the Varaita torrent: the union between the two settlements is determined by a charming stone bridge.

The heart of the country is represented by the little square where the ancient church of Sant’Antonio rises up with the characteristic fountain.

Always along the main street of Chianale, called the Chemin Royal, we bump into Martinet House, where in the past the Calvinist worship was practiced. Finally, beyond the stream, here is the Parish Church of San Lorenzo, worthy of a detailed visit too.

Even in Chianale you can try sports, particularly skiing. There are in fact ski lifts for winter skiing both in the village and at the higher altitude, at over 2,000 meters above sea level: to reach them it’s necessary to use the chair lift.

Furthermore, do not miss the chance to do some excursions along the trails surrounding the village: in Winter, instead, enjoy snowshoeing to discover the snowy peaks.
