<\/h5>\nThe small hill on which Rieti lies is located in the southeast area of the plain called “Plain of Rieti”.<\/p>\n
Rieti is located exactly in the center of the peninsula: also for this it is often called “the city of the center of Italy” or “the navel of Italy”.<\/p>\n
Its climate is rather frigid, so as to be the second capital of province with the lowest temperatures between April and September, just after the nearby L’Aquila.<\/p>\n
<\/h5>\nThe city has often been affected by earthquakes, most of which however occurred in the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
Such as the one of 24th August (magnitude 6.0) in the area located between the towns of Amatrice and Accumoli.<\/p>\n
The relationships always existing with Rome date back from the famous Rape of the Sabine Women, when Romulus kidnapped with deception the women of the Sabine people to repopulate the capital city.<\/p>\n
The city experienced a period of great splendor in 1200, where it was often elected Papal seat. In this period should be mentioned the presence of St. Francis of Assisi in Rieti.<\/p>\n
Famous is also the battle of Rieti of 7 March 1821, considered the first of the Risorgimento, where the Carbonari were defeated by the Austrians.<\/p>\n
The old town centre is dotted with churches of great artistic and cultural value: should be mentioned, in particular, the Cathedral of St. Mary, adorned with baroque chapels, a crypt and the presence within it of the Diocesan Museum with numerous Medieval frescoes.<\/p>\n
And more the Church of St. Augustine, in Romanesque-Gothic style.<\/p>\n
The Church of San Domenico, recovered and re-consecrated in the 90s after centuries of neglect (in the early twentieth century it was even a sawmill, ed).<\/p>\n
Also it is worthy to visit the small but pretty Church of St. Francis, which overlooks the same name square.<\/p>\n
The Medieval Walls of Rieti date back to the thirteenth century and along their route there are five doors :\u00a0Porta D’Arci, Porta Conca, Porta San Giovanni, Porta Cintia and Porta Romana.<\/p>\n
The Bishop’s Palace, which is located on the right side of the Cathedral, and the Town Hall, which overlooks Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.<\/p>\n
Beautiful are also the Fountain of the Dolphins and the “underground Rieti”, which extends inside some cellars located in the palaces of Via Roma and through which you can observe the remains of the ancient Via Salaria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
