Become a World Heritage Site since 1993, the Sassi of Matera<\/strong> are one of the junction points that constitute the center of the city.<\/p>\n

Among the first wonders of Southern Italy to have found a place in this list, the Sassi are undoubtedly an appointment with the local history, as they bring to light the prehistoric past of the places where today stands a populated and tourist rich urban core, making it after the millenniums a significant and symbolic element of the community.<\/p>\n

The Sassi of Matera outline one of the most interesting aspects of the civilization of the place, being present since the Paleolithic settlements.<\/h4>\n

\"\"They are made up of landscapes in which the flow of time is more than remarkable, having contributed to the development of villages and the containment of tanks and a number of estabilishments that have always constituted the core of the collective life of the surroundings.<\/p>\n

Even today, constituting the oldest part of the city, the Sassi are one of the major attractions because of their morphology, which includes subways alternating labyrinths carved into the rock, places that undoubtedly lend themselves to excursions and trips with the help of local guides.<\/p>\n

There are, however, opportunities to experience the beauty of Matera also in the evening, when the city rests.<\/h4>\n

The lights of small local residences and urban squares surround the town especially in the summer season, where local folklore is commemorated with live music shows, and thanks to the presence of structures such as bars and restaurants which bring to life the feeling of a typical rural culture of the past, all not far from the two most important Sassi, Barisano and Caveoso, for a full immersion in nature, culture and pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n
